The kitchen is one of the most used and therefore most important rooms in the home and it can be a lot of fun to renovate if you do things right and spend time working on a quality design. As long as you do things right it can be really enjoyable but you do have to consider so many different things, from what countertops to install to what flooring would work best. Your goal should be to come up with a design that is appealing to the eye but also functional. One of the most important decisions to make and one that will truly affect the overall look of the room is the kitchen remodeling backsplash.
This is a decorative part of the kitchen and should be one of the focal pieces of the room. You can choose from an endless selection of colors, patterns and styles. It is always better to choose the countertops before you start working on the backsplash. Some people like to do it the other way around but the countertops are more important and more expensive.
It is better to invest your money in the countertops of your choice and then find a backsplash that works with them. Consider different ideas and figure out what you like and what you do not like. There are lots of design books and design ideas online so you can get a better idea. Typically you will be working with about 18 inches between the countertops and the cupboards and if you want a bit more space you could have the cupboards raised but this will be an added expense.
You can choose to have the backsplash run the entire length of one wall which is usually the nicest look. Some even decide to only have the backsplash behind the sink area. If there happen to be any electrical outlets in the way you are going to have to make a whole new decision. Figure out whether there is a way to incorporate them into your design or if you would prefer to just get rid of them.
Usually if the room already has a few other outlets you are not going to be missing anything and they will not be sticking out like eyesores in your design. Color is so important in a kitchen and you want to keep everything clean and minimal looking. You want this to be a place that you and your family and friends enjoy coming to eat and entertain. Once you have the backsplash figured out you can get to work on other parts of the design.
